The Food Issue: The Regulars

“What keeps you coming back?" by Arielle Stevenson

That’s the question we posed to people from myriad walks of life in Tampa Bay, asking why certain restaurants and bars have made regulars out of them. Their responses took us all over, some to places we know and love, others to places we never even knew existed.

For power players like Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch, the go-to spot is Kahwa South in downtown St. Pete, the perfect place to bump into local movers and shakers.

In downtown Tampa, the Tampa Theatre staff likes to spring for after-work libations at their notoriously heavy-pouring neighbor, The Hub.

For reporter Dalia Colon, it’s a gas station barbecue joint making undeniably good food in the most unassuming of locales, which she discovered in the process of doing a story.

“Character in buckets.” That’s how breakfast blogger Andy Seely described Skyway Jack’s on a recent Sunday morning. He loves the food, the prices, and the pig-centric décor at Jack’s, but it’s the whole package that makes it a repeat destination — the homey feeling inside that makes you want to come back again and again.

Meet the regulars.
